About the role

The Legal Counsel (Workers Compensation) is responsible for the management of the legal aspects of workers compensation and personal injury claims including the timely provision of commercial, legally accurate, innovative and strategic advice to the business. This position is based in the Brisbane head office at South Bank.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage the portfolio of workers compensation and personal injury claims within the Australia business unit
  • Consult with relevant stakeholders to achieve best-for-business outcomes
  • Provide practical, innovative and commercial written and verbal legal advice
  • Develop and maintain commercial and respectful relationships with legal representatives, clients, regulators, and other business partners including suppliers and subcontractors
  • Prepare and deliver relevant and targeted legal, commercial and compliance training
  • Conduct code of conduct and safety investigations, including the review of safety incident reports for the business and preservation of legal professional privilege where appropriate.

About you

This role will suit someone who has the ability to uphold professional standards, escalate ethics and integrity matters when advising the business whilst balancing commercial and internal drivers.

Key skills and experience for this role include:

  • Law degree and admitted to legal practice
  • 2-6 years post qualification experience required
  • A current practising certificate within an Australian jurisdiction (Queensland preferred)
  • Private practice law firm or in-house legal experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing the legal aspects of workers compensation and personal injury claims
  • Experience within the resources or construction industry is highly desirable
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to influence at all levels
  • The ability to collaborate with key stakeholders and personnel with integrity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

This role may involve domestic travel.
