About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to advance and utilise their skills in planning practice and research, applying leading edge technology and innovation to meet urban challenges. You will have a strong background in strategic urban planning and a desire to embrace digital modelling, urban analytics and integrated geospatial  platforms applied on cutting edge projects as part of the world leading CSDILA team. 

The Urban Planner/Research Fellow will be a member of the team responsible for advancing urban planning, modelling and analytics capabilities and projects contributing to the CSDILA’s vision through innovative applied research and development. Working closely with the Centre’s Director, Enterprise Fellow Urban Analytics Lead and the technical team, the incumbent will brief, scope, develop and implement urban analytical inputs/outputs for  models and projects applied in urban and regional planning domains. These projects are aligned to the CSDILA Digital Twin platform and related sustainable development, urban planning and decision support systems. The Centre’s portfolio of projects is continually evolving, a current list is available via eng.unimelb.edu.au/csdila. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with CSDILA’s Urban Analytics Lead and the technical team in the design and preparation of projects for urban planning, modelling and urban analytics including the Geospatial Modelling System for Planning & Development (GSMSPD) project.
  • Developing planning use cases/indicators for input into the CSDILA’s Digital Twin capabilities for urban modelling, scenario simulation, and decision making.
  • Independent research and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, support teaching and research activities such as lab preparation, tools development for tutorials and assisting Centre hosted events, forums and workshops.
  • Report writing and preparation of presentations and papers demonstrating high quality communications applying strong skill sets in analysing data, problem solving and maintaining accurate research and project records.

Who We Are Looking For
We’re on the lookout for people with strong communication, collaboration and practice skills with demonstrated experience in achieving effective project outputs. Individuals should be team players with developed analytical and critical thinking skills, capable of operating autonomously and effectively engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders to initiate, develop and implement strategic plans, and projects.

You will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in urban planning, architecture, property and or land administration or related disciplines.
  • Extensive experience in strategic urban and regional planning, design and delivery of major sustainable projects, policies and programs.
  • Advanced conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills, including strategic planning and project management experience.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
