About the Role
The School of BioSciences seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative academic with expertise in quantitative aspects of biotechnology. This Education and Research-focused role reports to the Director of Biotechnology Programs, Greg Kubik, and offers the opportunity to develop an independent research program with synergies across the School’s strengths in zoology, plant science, entomology, and microbial biology. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in emerging quantitative tools within the broad field of biotechnology.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct a program of research that contributes to the biotechnology discipline in the School of BioSciences.
  • Publish research findings in international refereed journals and present results at seminars, conferences, and meetings.
  • Actively contribute to teaching, including the development and delivery of taught materials, marking, and coordination of subjects.  In the capacity of subject (the University of Melbourne word for courses) coordinators, you will be expected to manage academic colleagues to successfully develop and deliver curricula.
  • Actively participate at School and/or Faculty meetings and play a leadership role in planning activities or committee work to support capacity building and strategic planning in the School. 
  • Conduct of research that contributes to the School’s strategic research priorities your area.

Who We Are Looking For
You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to manage projects and meet deadlines effectively. You will have a strong application-driven mindset focused on advancing impactful knowledge, along with excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

You will also have:

  • PhD in an aspect of synthetic biology, bioinformatics, quantitative modelling, genomics or a related field of biology.  
  • Outstanding track record, relative to opportunity, in conducting research and publishing in top peer-reviewed academic journals. 
  • Experience teaching as a teaching assistant/demonstrator/tutor of any biotechnology and/or quantitative biology subjects at the tertiary level (Level B) or experience developing teaching materials and demonstrating as a lecturer ( meaning as a member of a course’s primary teaching staff, not as a guest lecturer or tutor; Level C) Track record of successfully mentoring postgraduate research students as a co- supervisor (Level B) or as a primary supervisor (Level C).  
  • Obtained research funding through competitive student or ECR schemes from internal university sources or small external funding programs (Level B) or as a CI on external granting schemes or industry contracts (Level C). 
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of collaborative research and teaching teams. 
  • Experience conducting research in collaborative research with Industry partners as a student (Level B) or as a CI or Research Fellow with leadership responsibilities (Level C).

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. BioSciences houses 60 continuing academic staff, and more than 150 academic staff overall (including postdocs, and other research contingent staff) all working on the world’s top biological challenges – from climate change, biosecurity and pollution to reproductive health and food production. Collectively members of our School lead more than 240 research projects in the general areas of ecology, evolution, zoology, marine biology, genetics, plant science, genomics, biosecurity, biological pollution, reproductive biology and data science. 

The School of BioSciences was formed in 2015 through the amalgamation of the School of Botany and the Departments of Genetics and Zoology thus bringing together a critical mass of 160 Academic staff and 240 Research Higher Degree students undertaking world class teaching and research in the biological sciences.  Academics within the School are aligned to 2 research domains - Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Molecular and Systems Biology. Through cross-disciplinary collaborations within the School and with external partners the School is a major recipient of grant and contract funding.
