About the Role 
The AI Technical Lead will drive the strategic development and implementation of AI solutions within the Australian BioCommons, with a focus on advancing the Human Genome Informatics (HGI) division and broader life sciences initiatives. This role involves leading technical research, designing AI infrastructure for large-scale data analysis, and fostering knowledge sharing to enhance researcher engagement with AI methods. Collaborating across interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders, you will play a pivotal role in shaping AI-driven innovation across health, biodiversity, and agriculture research projects. 

Your responsibilities will include: 

• Design, guide and develop the implementation of AI solutions for understanding and analysing human genomics, multi-omics, phenotyping and other modality data for life sciences research. 
• Design and apply AI techniques and machine learning-driven predictive models to accelerate research outcomes. 
• Provide leadership, expertise, and guidance relating to large-scale AI experimental design, evaluation, data harmonisation and integration strategies. 
• Oversee AI implementation in key projects within the HGI division. 

Who We Are Looking For 
The successful candidate will possess exceptional collaborative and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage multi-organisational collaborations, and effectively communicate complex AI concepts to diverse stakeholders. They will demonstrate adaptability, initiative, and a strong commitment to supporting researchers in leveraging AI solutions to achieve scientific goals. 

You will also have: 

• PhD qualification in AI, ML, Computer Science, or related fields. 
• Very significant track record in the application of AI techniques for life science research, particularly in human health and genomics. 
• Strong knowledge of data processing and feature engineering using ML frameworks in Python and/or R (e.g., Scikit-learn, tidymodels). 
• Extensive experience in handling large datasets, performing data exploration, transformation, harmonisation and feature extraction to prepare data for downstream AI model training and evaluation.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
