Join the Collaborative Centre for Genomic Cancer Medicine as a Research Software Engineer (Data Manager).
In this role, you'll have the opportunity to transform the way genomic data is managed, leveraging your expertise in cloud computing and software development.
You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, bioinformaticians, and industry partners to develop innovative solutions that streamline data flow, enhance security, and drive groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Data Management Solutions: Conduct requirement analysis, research, and prototype technological solutions to underpin human genomics data management and dissemination.
- Software Development: Contribute to the design, coding, testing, and debugging of software applications tailored for efficient handling of large-scale genomics data in cloud or hybrid environments.
- Collaboration and Alignment: Work closely with international collaborators, commercial partners, and researchers to align software development efforts with research objectives and industry standards.
- Deployment and Maintenance: Participate in the deployment, scaling, and maintenance of data management solutions, ensuring robustness, security, and optimal performance.

You are a software engineer with a passion for leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive meaningful impact in cancer research and healthcare.
You may also:
- Possess a degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or have extensive software development experience.
- Be proficient in programming languages like Python, Rust, or similar, with experience in relevant libraries and frameworks.
- Have familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure, with AWS experience preferred.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the UNIX/Linux environment and modern software development approaches.
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills and an eagerness to learn new technologies and methodologies.
- Exhibit strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks and resources efficiently.

Your new team – “Department of Clinical Pathology”
The Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne is focused on graduate teaching, research, and engagement in pathology, based in the state-of-the-art Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Currently expanding, it boasts around 40 research staff and a $2 million annual operating budget. Its research, led by Professor Sean Grimmond, focuses on cancer, particularly molecular tumour defects and their implications for prognosis and treatment, alongside broader clinical pathology education, including in the Doctor of Medicine program and thriving postgraduate student cohorts.
