Research Fellow in Electron Cryo Microscopy (Part-time)

About the Role
Join the Bio21 Institute’s Ian Holmes Imaging Centre (IHIC) as part of the structural biology cryo-TEM platform team.

In this role, you will provide scientific advice, liaise with users to understand their requirements, collaborate with electron microscopy teams to support cryoEM research, train new users on side-entry TEMs and potentially automated microscopes, and contribute to method development activities if time permits.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne
  • Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposal submissions to internal or external funding bodies as relevant.
  • Undertake administrative functions and obligations primarily connected with the staff member’s area of research.
  • Contribute to and assist in the co-supervision and training of research students.

Who We Are Looking For
You will have strong expertise in structural biology, with hands-on experience using electron cryo microscopes to study macromolecular complexes and proficiency in cryoEM reconstruction algorithms such as Relion, EMAN2, or cryoSPARC.

You will also have:

  • Completion or (or near completion) of a PhD in a related discipline
  • A demonstrated aptitude for research, with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

he Bio21 Institute's $20m Ian Holmes Imaging Centre (IHIC) is a key facility designed for life and physical sciences as well as engineering applications.

At Bio21, the IHIC is home to the University of Melbourne's largest park of electon microscopes and housed in the newly redeveloped Ruth Bishop building (ex VRI).  It is currently equipped with ten state-of-the-art electron microscopes (6 transmission, 2 Focussed Ion Beam and 2 scanning electron microscopes).
