John Holland, CPB Contractors and Ghella has commenced design and construction work for the Sydney Metro West – Eastern Tunnelling Package.

With a contract worth $1.63 billion, the Eastern Tunnelling Package includes construction of 3.5-kilometre tunnels under Sydney Harbour between The Bays and the Sydney CBD, and the excavation of Pyrmont and Hunter Street stations. Starting at The Bays, tunnel boring machines will cross the harbour near the Anzac Bridge, before heading to the new Pyrmont station and then under Darling Harbour before reaching Hunter Street in the heart of the CBD.

We are currently seeking a high performing Project Engineer with a strong mechanical background and solid site-based experience.

The role

This role is responsible for coordinating on-site engineering functions for Slurry TBM operations to achieve time and budget objectives and provide efficient support for direct and indirect reports.

  • Obtain relevant design parameter information for incorporation into detailed designs and construction specifications
  • Monitor quality and quantities of incoming equipment and material, check work drawings, construction and specifications against site plans and conditions and arrange corrections or modifications where necessary.
  • Coordinate the activities of an engineering team, programme work-loads and provide technical and administrative guidance to the engineering staff to ensure aims and objectives are effectively and economically achieved
  • Ensure that project engineering completion is on time and within budget. Record completed work, costs incurred, materials used and retain progress drawings
  • Accurate forecasts of costs and revenue and utilise corrective action in line with JH’s authority and reporting frameworks to maximise the profit margin
  • Assign work and assist with reviews for accuracy and adherence to required standards of supplier, subcontractor quotations/purchase orders as well as subcontractor arrangements

Skills and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, Building Construction or equivalent
  • Senior Project Engineer and operational experience is essential
  • 3 + years site based experience on >$100M Projects. Tunnelling experience will be highly regarded.
  • Advanced commercial acumen including cost reduction and meeting budgets
  • Experience with the delivery of major projects and teams to program and budget specifications
  • Understanding of the Quality Management Plan. Safety Management Plan, Environmental Management Plan and Projects Design Management Plan
