The West Gate Tunnel is a partnership between the Victorian Government and Transurban. The Joint Venture has been chosen as the contractor for construction, which began in early 2018 following planning assessment. 

About the Project

The West Gate Tunnel Project is a city-shaping project that will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, provide quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks off residential streets. The project will include:

  • Widening the West Gate Freeway from eight lanes to 12 between the M80 Ring Road and Williamstown Road;
  • Building a 2.8km eastbound tunnel and a 4km westbound tunnel under Yarraville;
  • Constructing a bridge over the Maribyrnong River providing an alternative to the West Gate Bridge;
  • Constructing an elevated road along Footscray Road to the Port of Melbourne;
  • Major new cycling and pedestrian paths.

The position:

Based in the east zone of the project, the primary responsibility of the Traffic Engineer/Traffic Drafter is to coordinate and plan traffic management functions to achieve project safety and budget objectives.  Ensure the safety of the work force and the public with the use of appropriate traffic management plans for the construction of the project that are complaint to the contract and all relevant standards and guidelines.

 

Additional responsibilities will also include but not be limited to:

  • Assist with preparation of site construction / traffic related budgets.
  • Monitor construction progress for adherence to program and report to the Project Manager.
  • Demonstrate financial management skills and commercial acumen when making decisions.
  • Interpret design for implementation in construction projects
  • Contribute to improvements to existing designs with reference to appropriate design standards and codes.
  • Undertake quantitative and qualitative safety, environment and quality risk assessment to ensure acceptable quality of structures and finishes.
  • Analyse and use of document and record management, progress and project performance reporting compliance reporting.
  • Ensure timely delivery of construction traffic management assessment reports and analysis’ in relation to various construction activities.

 

About you:

To be successful you will ideally have the following experience and capabilities:

  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Science, Building Construction or equivalent
  • Diploma of Project Management in Engineering, Science, Building, Construction or equivalent Working towards Chartered Engineering Status
  • Minimum 3 years’ traffic engineering experience
  • Experience on  > $10 M Projects
  • Traffic Engineer and operational experience, design experience (Broad knowledge of traffic engineering specifically in construction and traffic staging)
  • Knowledge of project management structure, plans, specification, standards and implications for project accountabilities
  • Understanding of the Project Design Management Plan, Quality Management Plan. Safety Management Plan and Environmental Management Plan
  • Pre-contracts knowledge in relation to design, planning and legislative requirements
  • Previous traffic drafting experience in either AutoCAD or MicroStation will be highly regarded.
