What you’ll do

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will play a critical role in advising the business on complex commercial, contractual and regulatory matters. You will work closely with senior leaders and operational teams to support contract formation, project delivery, risk management, and stakeholder engagement across the business. Your expertise will directly influence successful outcomes on high‑value, long‑term mining and resources services contracts.

You will report to the Head of Legal and Commercial Australia East and collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including the Thiess General Counsel, CEO, CFO, HR, Australia East Leadership Team, regulators, clients, JV partners, subcontractors, suppliers and the wider CIMIC Group legal network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic, practical and commercially focused legal advice across tendering, contract formation and execution.
  • Review tender documentation and conduct contract risk assessments.
  • Negotiate contract terms with clients and support operational teams as required.
  • Provide legal guidance on subcontracting strategies, terms and negotiations.
  • Support subcontract administration and operational matters.
  • Lead proactive management of claims, disputes and litigation with an emphasis on best‑for‑business outcomes and minimal external cost.
  • Liaise with regulators and support ethics and safety investigations, ensuring appropriate legal professional privilege is maintained.

What you’ll bring

You are a senior legal professional who thrives in complex commercial environments, particularly within mining, resources or major contracting. You demonstrate strong integrity, sound judgement and the ability to balance commercial drivers with ethical obligations.

You will bring:

  • A Law degree and admission to legal practice; a current practising certificate is preferred.
  • 10–15+ years’ legal experience, with a good proportion of time spent in‑house.
  • Experience with long‑term, high‑value mining/resources services contracts.
  • Strong commercial acumen and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship‑building skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, take initiative and manage competing priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft systems including SharePoint/Sites, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Willingness to travel domestically as required.
