The Eva Copper Mine Project is located on the traditional lands of the Kalkadoon People in North West Queensland, approximately 75 km north-west of Cloncurry and about 95 km north-east of Mount Isa.
The Project is an iron-oxide copper-gold resource featuring multiple open pits and is poised to become the largest greenfield copper mine in Queensland.

Roster: 8 Day On, 6 Days Off | Location: Eva Copper, Queensland | Employment Type: Fulltime
Thiess is seeking a Drill and Blast Engineer to join our dynamic team at the Eva Copper Mine Project in the Cloncurry region of Queensland, Australia. In this role, you’ll contribute directly to safe and efficient production by developing high‑quality drill and blast designs that meet operational, geotechnical and compliance requirements.
Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer, your duties will include:
Drill and blast planning and execution
- Provide drill and blast engineering support across the shift‑to‑three‑month planning window.
- Develop safe, efficient and compliant drill and blast designs that meet production, geotechnical and operational requirements.
- Create plans that support fragmentation, wall control and downstream loading and haulage performance.
- Work closely with the Drill and Blast Supervisor to ensure plans are practical, executable and aligned with site constraints.
- Maintain accuracy and integrity of all drill and blast design, charging and performance data in Wenco, InfoMine and related reporting systems.
Design, monitoring and optimisation
- Design, monitor and optimise drill and blast activities to ensure alignment with approved mine plans, geotechnical constraints and production targets.
- Conduct regular checks on drilling accuracy, burden and spacing, charge placement and blast outcomes, adjusting designs where required.
- Review performance data and recommend improvements that enhance efficiency, safety and cost effectiveness.
Support, collaboration and development
- Work collaboratively with Production, Survey and Technical Services teams to keep designs aligned with broader mine plans.
- Provide technical guidance and support to Kalkadoon Cadets, contributing to their development under the direction of the Senior Mining Engineer.
- Complete structured handovers to ensure continuity across rosters.
About you
- 3+ years’ experience in a Drill & Blast technical role
- Proven experience in open-cut hard rock mining
- Understanding of reporting and reconciliation processes
- Understanding of mining principles, design concepts and operations (particularly their relation to drill and blast and data reconciliation activities)
- Proficient in Vulcan/Deswik.CAD, Blasting database software and MS Office tools
- Understanding of how technical outcomes impact financial results
- Knowledge of the relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and Australian standards
- Well-developed written and oral communication skills
