The Opportunity
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for shaping and executing the Group’s tax strategy, ensuring compliance with Australian and international tax obligations, and providing trusted advice to the Board, shareholders and executive leadership.
Leading a high-performing tax team, you will balance strong technical expertise with commercial insight and stakeholder influence to support business decisions and protect Thiess’ reputation across multiple jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Group Tax function, fostering a culture aligned to Thiess’ values of Discovery, Accountability, Respectful and Empowered.
- Develop and implement a tax team strategy that supports the Thiess business strategy.
- Drive change initiatives and continuous improvement across tax processes and ways of working.
- Provide strategic oversight of global tax risk management and optimisation of the Group’s total tax position.
- Prepare high-quality tax advice and position papers for senior management, the Board and shareholders.
- Oversee the Tax Governance Policy, including Board-level reporting and internal compliance review programs.
- Manage reputational risk and maintain effective, constructive relationships with revenue authorities globally.
- Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all direct and indirect tax obligations across global operations.
- Oversee tax effect accounting for the global Thiess Group.
- Act as a key interface with the ATO, international tax authorities, auditors and external tax advisers.
About You
You are a senior tax leader with deep technical expertise, strong commercial acumen and the confidence to influence at executive and Board level. You thrive in complex, global environments and bring a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach to tax governance and compliance.
Qualifications & Experience
- Tertiary qualifications in Commerce or Law.
- CA, CPA or CTA qualification.
- Significant experience in senior tax roles within large corporates and/or Big 4 environments.
- Demonstrated Australian and international tax experience; mining or similar industry experience highly regarded.
- In-depth knowledge of income tax, GST and FBT, with solid understanding of international tax and transfer pricing.
- Strong capability in tax effect accounting and managing audits across multiple jurisdictions.
