The Opportunity

As Lead Data Engineer, you will provide both technical and people leadership, overseeing a team of data engineering professionals while shaping the future of Thiess' enterprise data and analytics capability.

Working closely with business stakeholders, architects, analysts and technology teams, you will lead the delivery of high-quality data products and platforms that support operational reporting, advanced analytics and AI-driven decision making. You'll play a key role in establishing engineering standards, modernising data architecture and ensuring our platform continues to evolve to meet the needs of a growing global business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of Data Engineers and technical specialists.
  • Drive the ongoing evolution of Thiess' enterprise data platform and data lakehouse architecture.
  • Design, develop and support scalable data pipelines, integrations and reusable data products.
  • Establish and maintain data engineering standards, development frameworks and best practices.
  • Oversee platform operations, monitoring, optimisation, incident management and continuous improvement.
  • Work with stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into practical data solutions.
  • Champion data governance, data quality, metadata, security and lineage practices.
  • Lead major platform initiatives, deployment activities and data solution delivery.
  • Promote modern engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing and DevOps methodologies.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve analytics, reporting and AI readiness across the business.

About You

You are a highly capable technical leader with strong experience building and operating enterprise-scale cloud data platforms. You enjoy leading teams, solving complex data challenges and delivering solutions that create measurable business value.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Experience leading and mentoring Data Engineering teams or technical specialists.
  • Proven success designing, developing and supporting enterprise-scale cloud data platforms.
  • Experience delivering data lakehouse, data integration, data modelling and analytics solutions.
  • Experience within the mining, resources or heavy industry sector will be highly regarded.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence across technical and business audiences.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, governance frameworks and delivery practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership in driving technical capability, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication, coaching and people leadership skills.
  • Experience working within large, complex operational environments.
