The Opportunity
Thiess is seeking experienced and motivated Engineer Drill & Blast to join our high-performing team at Wahana Coal Mine Project, South Kalimantan
As an Engineer Drill & Blast you will:
- Develop and implement safe, efficient, and cost-effective blast designs that meet operational, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage blasting activities to ensure compliance with vibration, overpressure, dust, and explosive fume limits while minimizing community and environmental impacts.
- Collaborate with Mine Planning and Production teams to align drilling and blasting activities with short-term mine plans and production targets.
- Monitor blast performance, analyze results, and identify opportunities to improve productivity, fragmentation, safety, and cost efficiency.
- Optimize explosive consumption and powder factors while maintaining budgetary and operational targets.
- Control drilling and blasting costs through effective management of labor, materials, and resources.
- Maintain accurate blasting records, performance data, and KPI reports to support operational analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with explosives suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure the timely availability and quality of explosives and blasting accessories.
- Ensure blast execution maximizes downstream productivity of mining equipment, including excavators and dozers.
- Prepare and submit daily reports on blasting activities, blast performance, inventory status, and operational outcomes.
- Investigate blasting-related issues, community complaints, and operational inefficiencies, and implement corrective actions to improve performance and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Provide technical expertise and recommendations to support safe, reliable, and sustainable drilling and blasting operations.
About you
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering.
- Valid Blaster Class 2 Certification (Juru Ledak Kelas II).
- “Madya” Competency Certification issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (preferred).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Drill & Blast operations within large-scale open-pit mining, including supervisory or leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of drilling and blasting principles, blast design, explosives management, and blast performance optimization.
- Good understanding of mining regulations, health, safety, environmental standards, and statutory compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with explosives supply contracts, magazine licensing requirements, and inventory control processes.
- Proven leadership capability with the ability to effectively manage teams and contractors.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate across operational and technical teams.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced mining environment.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Strong conflict resolution, planning, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to safety leadership, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
