What does the job look like?

As a member of the Safety, Health & Compliance Team, the Transport Safety Systems Manager will design and develop a practical Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure compliance with Heavy Vehicle National Law and other Chain of Responsibility (CoR) requirements. Working closely with operational leaders, drivers and regulators, you’ll embed effective, easy-to-use safety systems and drive continuous improvement across transport operations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and continuously improve a practical and effective Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Ensure compliance with HVNL, NHVR accreditation schemes and relevant legislation, aligned with ISO 45001
  • Embed clear, user-friendly safety systems into everyday operations across all levels of the business
  • Drive risk identification, assessment and control in line with the NHVR Master Code
  • Partner with stakeholders to integrate safety into business processes and operational workflows
  • Lead audits and maintain SMS documentation, policies and governance frameworks
  • Ensure contractors and subcontractors meet required safety and compliance standards
  • Monitor legislative changes and translate them into practical business actions
  • Develop and deliver training to uplift safety capability
  • Build strong relationships with regulators and support a culture of continuous improvement

About You:

You’re a hands-on safety professional with strong transport compliance knowledge, skilled at turning complex regulations into practical, effective systems. You confidently influence across all levels and take a collaborative, solutions-focused approach to safety.


You can demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Safety, Risk, Auditing or Compliance (preferred)
  • Experience developing and implementing safety and compliance systems in road transport
  • Strong knowledge of HVNL, NHVR frameworks and relevant legislation
  • Understanding of risk management within a Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Ability to translate legislation into practical, business-ready solutions
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
