What does the job look like?

As the Payroll Operations Lead, you will provide senior operational and technical support across a complex payroll environment, ensuring payroll processes are accurate, compliant and effectively controlled. Working closely with Payroll, HR, Industrial and Workplace Relations, Finance and broader Linfox business units, you will be a key escalation point for complex payroll matters.

A key focus will be strengthening payroll operations through auditing, reporting, data integrity and process improvement, while identifying opportunities for automation and greater operational efficiency.

This role is onsite based out of our HQ in Essendon Fields (VIC)

Other duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead routine and ad-hoc payroll audits to ensure accuracy and compliance across payroll calculations, allowances, superannuation and tax configurations.
  • Manage and resolve complex payroll queries, compliance matters and operational issues.
  • Validate payroll data and support accurate and timely processing across weekly, fortnightly and monthly pay cycles.
  • Monitor data integrity, system configurations and rate structures, identifying and resolving issues as required.
  • Partner with HR and Industrial and Workplace Relations on rate changes, Enterprise Agreements and legislative requirements.
  • Review and strengthen payroll controls, processes, procedures and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Develop clear documentation, guidelines and training materials to improve team capability and consistency.
  • Drive continuous improvement and automation opportunities to reduce manual activity and improve operational efficiency.
  • Develop dashboards, variance reports and operational metrics to support payroll and leadership decision-making.
  • Undertake root-cause analysis and coordinate corrective action where payroll anomalies are identified.
  • Provide hands-on technical and processing support during peak periods, leave and other periods of operational demand.

Are you the one?

You are an experienced payroll professional who combines strong technical payroll knowledge with an analytical and continuous improvement mindset. Comfortable operating in a large and complex environment, you can work through challenging payroll issues, interpret data, strengthen controls and translate findings into practical solutions. You are also confident partnering with senior stakeholders, coaching others and driving improvements without needing direct reports to make an impact.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate:

  • Extensive payroll experience within a large and complex organisation, ideally supporting 3,000+ employees.
  • A minimum of 5+ years' SAP HR/Payroll experience, with strong knowledge of SAP data maintenance and rate structures.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Modern Awards, Enterprise Agreements, superannuation and payroll tax requirements.
  • Proven experience conducting payroll audits, reconciliations, remediation activities and root-cause analysis.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience working with complex payroll data and reconciliations.
  • Experience developing operational reporting and dashboards, with Power BI exposure highly regarded.
  • Experience developing payroll processes, workflows, procedures and training materials.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills, with the ability to coach and support others.
  • Experience with UKG Workforce Dimensions or a similar time and attendance system would be advantageous.
  • A finance-related bachelor's qualification, ideally with an accounting background.
