Engineer (Civil / Structural)

Location: Rockhampton

Remuneration/Benefit: Competitive remuneration including overtime. Relocation packages available.

About the role:

Aurizon Network Asset Management is looking for a motivated Civil / Structural Engineer to join our Civil and Structures Assets team and help shape the future of one of Australia’s most important rail networks.

You will contribute to the asset management strategy that connects inland producers with ports along the Queensland coast, from Bowen through Sarina to Gladstone. This is a broad, hands-on role offering exposure to the full asset lifecycle—from understanding asset condition and risk through to shaping renewal scopes, budgets, designs and delivery priorities.

You will help develop capital renewal and maintenance programs across a diverse civil and structures portfolio, including:

  • Structures — more than 4,000 culverts, 300 bridges, retaining walls and other structural assets
  • Level crossings — more than 700 crossings with a mix of active and passive controls
  • Geotechnical and earthworks — steep slopes through several mountain ranges and the formation supporting the track asset
  • Access points and access roads — connecting our teams safely and efficiently with railway infrastructure
  • Corridor security and fencing — supporting a rail network across an area larger than Tasmania

Working closely with Design Management, Program Management, operations and maintenance teams, you will influence practical, whole-of-business outcomes from concept and design through to delivery of renewal works—balancing safety, risk, track access, cost and scope.

  • Influence stakeholders across the business to achieve better outcomes for civil and structures assets
  • Assess asset condition, defects and failure modes, applying risk-based engineering judgement to support investment decisions
  • Develop renewal and maintenance scopes, budgets and forward programs, and manage changes through planning and delivery
  • Improve the processes, tools and data used to make asset management decisions
  • Develop and refine strategies, standards, policies and practical engineering guidelines
  • Analyse asset information and translate it into clear priorities and recommendations

Around 20% of your time will be spent in the field travelling across the network, giving you direct exposure to the assets you manage and the people who operate and maintain them. The balance offers flexible working across the office and home.

About you:

You are an early-to-mid career Civil or Structural Engineer who is ready to broaden your experience beyond a single project or discipline. You bring experience in design, construction and/or asset management, and you are keen to apply your technical knowledge in a practical operational environment. You enjoy solving complex problems, learning from experienced professionals and working with a wide range of stakeholders to turn sound engineering into real-world outcomes.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering or equivalent (mandatory)
  • Approximately 2–8 years’ experience in a civil or structural engineering role (mandatory)
  • The ability to obtain registration a Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) in the next 2 years (preferred)
  • Experience with rail track infrastructure (desirable, but not essential)

What you will bring:

  • A practical understanding of infrastructure operations, design, construction, maintenance and safety requirements
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to consult, negotiate and influence at different levels of the business
  • The ability to apply legislation, regulation, standards and engineering requirements in a practical and proportionate way
  • Strong written communication skills, with an interest in developing standards, specifications, policies, guidelines and processes
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to balance risk, performance, cost and deliverability

If you are ready to accelerate your development, take ownership of a diverse infrastructure portfolio and see the impact of your decisions in the field, we would like to hear from you.
