The Opportunity

Are you a safety‑focused, technically skilled professional with a strong understanding of chemistry laboratory operations? The School of Chemistry is seeking a Safety and Technical Operations Coordinator to help ensure our teaching and research environments remain safe, compliant, and well‑supported.

In this hands‑on role, you will play a key part in the day‑to‑day coordination of safety governance, laboratory operations, and essential technical services across our facilities. Working closely with academic, professional, and technical staff, you will provide practical guidance on chemical safety, support infrastructure requests, and maintain critical systems that keep our laboratories functioning smoothly.

You will collaborate with stakeholders across the School, Faculty, Buildings and Property Division, Security, and contractors to coordinate laboratory works, manage disruptions, and maintain high standards of safety and operational reliability. You will also represent the School on the Faculty OHS Committee, ensuring effective communication and escalation of safety matters.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Support the School’s safety governance by conducting laboratory audits and inspections, coordinating risk assessments, and contributing to incident investigations and corrective actions
  • Provide specialist advice on chemical safety, hazardous substances, waste management, and the maintenance of SOPs, chemical inventories, risk registers, and safety documentation

  • Coordinate technical and infrastructure requirements within teaching and research laboratories, including instrument installation needs, service connections, and essential utilities such as gas, vacuum, compressed air, and cryogenics

  • Liaise with Buildings & Property, Security, trades, and contractors to coordinate planned works, assess impacts, ensure safety protocols are followed, and communicate disruptions

  • Support laboratory operations by overseeing chemistry‑specific services, including chemical waste contracts, gas bottle infrastructure, cryogenic deliveries, and other essential technical systems

  • Assist with space and access coordination, including office and laboratory utilisation, building access setup, and occasional support for staff, student, and visitor onboarding

  • Contribute to disaster preparedness and risk management activities, including emergency planning, drills, and business continuity efforts

  • Build strong working relationships across the School to provide clear, accessible advice that enables safe, efficient laboratory operations

If you are proactive, detail‑oriented, and passionate about supporting the safe and effective operation of world‑class chemistry facilities, we encourage you to apply.
