The Opportunity

Are you passionate about building research capacity and supporting researchers? The Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) is seeking a dynamic Research Development Manager to join our small collaborative team in the BDI Research Office.

The BDI is one of Australia’s leading biomedical research environments, attracting over $70 million annually across its 120 research groups. The Research Development Manager will manage and deliver high-quality research services to increase research performance and diversify research funding, in line with the BDI’s research goals.

Collaborating closely with the BDI’s Deputy Director and Senior Research Manager, the Research Development Manager will manage and deliver BDI’s grant development and administration activities, including providing a range of advisory and support services, designing and delivering training and resources for individuals and groups, and providing strategic advice and recommendations for senior management and staff on grant and funding opportunities.

As the successful candidate, the Research Development Manager will be responsible for:

  • Participating in strategic and operational planning to achieve the Institute’s and University’s research goals
  • Contributing to a review of BDI’s research development and administration services, as part of a refresh of the BDI Research Office
  • Managing and delivering a grant development and administration service for researchers, aligned with best practice and University policies
  • Providing specialist, expert advice on competitive funding applications to researchers and BDI’s leadership team, including on developments and priorities in the research sector and research policy
  • Maintaining subject-matter expertise in grant management systems and associated systems and software
  • Representing the Institute with internal and external stakeholders to foster funding opportunities and research collaborations
  • Developing and maintaining strong partnerships with other professional services portfolios at BDI, the Faculty and Monash-wide, as well as building links with research management professionals across Australia.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualifications, or extensive relevant experience and management expertise
  • Broad understanding of the Australian research environment, including funding opportunities
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience in drafting and editing high-quality proposals and reports
  • Strong operational management skills with the ability to provide authoritative advice
  • Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team to develop and deliver new initiatives
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills, with experience in resource allocation and meeting deadlines
  • Advanced analytical and conceptual skills, with the ability to assimilate new information and deliver innovative solutions
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and influence at senior levels
  • Advanced computer literacy, particularly with current business management software packages
