The Opportunity

Join our team as a Technical Services Officer and play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our teaching laboratories at the BDI. You will provide professional, high-quality technical services to staff and students, assisting in day-to-day lab operations, experiment preparation, and equipment maintenance. This position requires discipline specific technical knowledge in microbiology and molecular sciences to support practical teaching in the biomedical sciences. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and manage specimens, samples, and materials for practical classes
  • Set up and maintain laboratory equipment for experiments
  • Oversee lab safety, tidiness, and inventory management
  • Provide technical support and guidance to staff and students
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and PC2 standards
  • Stay updated on the latest lab technology, methodology, and best practices

Key Skills:

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in microbiology/molecular sciences
  • Growing bacteria, cloning, protein expression, gene libraries, sequencing DNA and proteins, blotting
  • Techniques in recombinant DNA, PCR, restriction enzymes, digest and transformations
  • Safe handling of microorganisms, identification of common species of bacteria and fungi and growing microbial cultures
  • Aseptic technique and its application
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with lab equipment, software, and laboratory procedures
