The Opportunity
The Research Software & Systems Engineer provides administrative and technical support for Monash eResearch software systems and tools. This role requires broad technical expertise to maintain and support all aspects of eResearch systems, including responding to user requests. This role is responsible for managing, configuring, maintaining, and securing servers to ensure optimal performance, availability, and security.
The role will be directly supporting the REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) capability and ensuring optimal utilisation from the research projects and evaluating the system’s long-term sustainability. The Research Software & Systems Engineer is expected to focus on
- Establishing a REDCap Support Model by developing standardised processes for user support, training, governance and systems administration ensuring efficient and scalable REDCap usage across research projects.
- Evaluating demand and growth by collecting usage data, user feedback, and support metrics to demonstrate the necessity and feasibility of maintaining a permanent REDCap support function, co-funded through research projects.
- Providing a long-term sustainability plan by assessing and establishing a model where REDCap support is sustained through research project contributions, ensuring ongoing viability without relying solely on central funding.
A key aspect of the role involves considerable consultation with researchers to understand their unique requirements and challenges, enabling the Research Software & Systems Engineer to recommend and implement tailored technical solutions that best support their research needs.
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in one or more of the major programming languages such as PHP and one of the major relational database packages such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL, with a strong understanding of database concepts. Also, strong knowledge of web server technologies (Apache, IIS, NGINX) and Windows and Linux operating systems.
Strong demonstrated experience with REDCap technologies would be highly desirable.
