The Opportunity

Are you passionate about translational cancer research? We are seeking a Research Officer to support the Gastrointestinal Cancer Group through the Department of Gastroenterology. This fixed-term position is for the specific task or project of assisting with patient consenting, sample collection, processing, and molecular analysis, with an anticipated completion timeline of 12 months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for consenting, collecting, processing, and preparing biospecimens from patients at the Alfred Hospital and offsite locations
  • Conduct laboratory experiments, including routine biochemistry, cellular biology, and immunohistochemistry
  • Participate in procedures involving laboratory mice
  • Prepare study protocols, ethics applications, and regulatory reports
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, SOPs, and inventory to support research operations
  • Ensure compliance with safety, ethical, and regulatory standards

About You:

Essential:

  • Degree in a relevant field (or equivalent experience in laboratory research)
  • Proficiency in cryotomy, microtomy and histological techniques
  • Experience in mouse handling and husbandry
  • Strong analytical, technical, and data management skills
  • Organised and detail-oriented with the ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable:

  • Experience in tissue culture
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry and microscopy
  • Experience in processing human/animal-derived tissue samples
