The Opportunity
Are you passionate about translational cancer research? We are seeking a Research Officer to support the Gastrointestinal Cancer Group through the Department of Gastroenterology. This fixed-term position is for the specific task or project of assisting with patient consenting, sample collection, processing, and molecular analysis, with an anticipated completion timeline of 12 months.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for consenting, collecting, processing, and preparing biospecimens from patients at the Alfred Hospital and offsite locations
- Conduct laboratory experiments, including routine biochemistry, cellular biology, and immunohistochemistry
- Participate in procedures involving laboratory mice
- Prepare study protocols, ethics applications, and regulatory reports
- Maintain laboratory equipment, SOPs, and inventory to support research operations
- Ensure compliance with safety, ethical, and regulatory standards
About You:
Essential:
- Degree in a relevant field (or equivalent experience in laboratory research)
- Proficiency in cryotomy, microtomy and histological techniques
- Experience in mouse handling and husbandry
- Strong analytical, technical, and data management skills
- Organised and detail-oriented with the ability to work both independently and in a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desirable:
- Experience in tissue culture
- Experience in immunohistochemistry and microscopy
- Experience in processing human/animal-derived tissue samples
