The Opportunity

Monash University is recruiting for a highly experienced and strategic Director, Risk and Compliance. Reporting into the Executive Director, Governance, Risk and Policy, this critical position is responsible for ensuring the University’s risk and compliance management is maintained and enhanced, while offering authoritative strategic advice and support to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of risk and compliance practices across the Monash Group. 

In this senior leadership role, you will head the Risk and Compliance Unit (RCU) and lead the coordination and implementation of the Monash Group Risk Management Framework. You will lead with vision and authority, working closely with the University’s senior executive and other senior staff to strengthen risk culture and day-to-day management of risk, enhance compliance practices, and embed accountability and responsibility for management of risk and compliance across all levels of the Monash Group.

As the Director, Risk and Compliance, you will:

  • Set the strategic vision for management of risk and compliance across the Monash Group, ensuring alignment with Monash’s strategic objectives and taking accountability for the delivery of RCU objectives
  • Maintain, enhance and oversee the implementation of the Group Risk Management Framework, ensuring it remains robust, responsive, and embedded across the Monash Group
  • Provide authoritative advice and insight to executive management, University committees, and governance bodies, delivering clear, strategic risk intelligence to shape institutional decision-making
  • Lead a high-performing team within the Risk and Compliance Unit (RCU), driving planning, resource allocation, and performance to strengthen risk and compliance management across the Monash Group
  • Champion a strong risk culture through communication, collaboration and education – promoting risk awareness and risk management responsibilities across all levels of the Monash Group, fostering a positive institutional risk culture for all staff
  • Build and sustain influential relationships with the senior executive and other senior staff, to unify and strengthen the University’s approach to risk and compliance

About you

We are looking for a strategic leader who brings:

  • Extensive senior leadership experience within a large and complex organisation, underpinned by a relevant postgraduate qualification and proven ability to drive enterprise-wide risk and compliance outcomes
  • A strong track record of enhancing strategic risk and compliance management in a large and complex organisation, with sound judgement and absolute integrity (including the ability to manage sensitive information)
  • Proven expertise in leading high-performing teams, with the ability to inspire, develop and empower professionals to deliver impactful advice, innovative solutions and continuous improvements
  • Outstanding analytical, written and oral communication, and advisory skills, with the capacity to distil complex information into clear, actionable advice
  • Exceptional relationship-building and influencing capabilities, with the gravitas to challenge constructively and foster strong, collaborative relationships across a large and complex organisation
