The Opportunity

Monash Centre for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies is seeking a Level B Postdoctoral Research Fellow to undertake innovative research in the phenomenology and (neuro)physiology of dreaming and related mental states. The role involves conducting analyses of existing datasets using first-person phenomenological methods and designing and implementing follow-up experiments within established projects exploring dreaming, mind wandering, mind blanking, lucidity, and sleep-related meditation. The position includes preparing high-quality publications and is well suited to a newly awarded PhD, or a candidate near submission, with demonstrated expertise in dream research and neurophenomenological methods.

The appointee will contribute to the preparation of research funding submissions aligned with the Centre’s strategic priorities, mentor students, and support junior researchers. The role also includes producing conference and seminar papers, undertaking research-related administrative responsibilities, participating in professional activities, and contributing, where appropriate, to teaching and postgraduate supervision within the relevant research area.

As the successful candidate, you will hold a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline, or equivalent research experience. Applications are welcome from candidates who have submitted, or are near submission of, their PhD thesis and can demonstrate an outstanding track record in the field. You will bring demonstrated expertise and established skills in dream research and first-person phenomenological methods as well as statistical analysis, manuscript and research proposal preparation, and a strong record of refereed publications. Experience in designing and conducting online and in-person experiments on the phenomenology and (neuro)physiology of dreaming and related mental states is essential.

You will have experience supervising or mentoring research staff and students, with evidence of developing leadership capability and supporting honours or postgraduate researchers. With the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, you will demonstrate excellent organisational, written and verbal communication skills, a collegiate approach to working with colleagues, and advanced computer proficiency, including experience with analytical software and the Microsoft Office suite.
