The Opportunity

The School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment is seeking an Assistant Lecturer to teach and conduct research under the ARC Future Fellowship project “Aridification of the Australian dryland margins” for Associate Professor Kathryn Fitzsimmons’ Quaternary Science Group, which has a focus on drylands and palaeoenvironmental change.

The Assistant Lecturer will teach undergraduate level courses on the following topics:

  • palaeoclimates,

  • environmental earth science, including sediments and interactions on the Earth surface, and

  • introduction to Quaternary science, including both the global and Australian context.

The Assistant Lecturer will also conduct collaborative research within the Monash Quaternary Science Group, with the opportunity to co-mentor research students and conduct their own independent research. Research interests include the reconstruction of palaeoenvironments and hydroclimate in drylands and on dryland margins, with opportunities to focus on lakes and lake shorelines, aeolian systems, fluvial systems, and the interactions between different landscape components.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience with sedimentological and/or geochronological techniques

  • Experience with community engagement

  • Experience in delivering university education at an excellent standard

The successful candidate will be mentored and assisted with their teaching (with training opportunities), and with their research activities, including publishing and applications for competitive research funding.

Quaternary sciences, sedimentology, GIS and/or geochronology expertise would be highly valued. If you would like to join a team where your specialist knowledge directly advances cutting‑edge science then apply today!
