The Opportunity
Join the School of Translational Medicine (STM) at the Alfred Campus as a Senior Technical Officer and help deliver high-quality genomics and bioinformatics services that enable researchers to turn complex data into meaningful scientific outcomes.
Working across the STM Genomics and STM Bioinformatics Platforms, you’ll collaborate closely with the Genomics and Bioinformatics Managers to support research projects from sample and library quality assessment through to sequencing, data processing, analysis and delivery.
What You'll Be Doing
- Support end-to-end NGS workflows, including sample reception, nucleic acid and library QC, library preparation, sequencing, primary data processing and data delivery.
- Operate, maintain and support NGS equipment, including Illumina sequencing platforms, and apply DNA and RNA library preparation methodologies such as WGS, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and EM-seq.
- Support bioinformatics projects through data management, quality control, analysis, reporting and preparation of research outputs, including cost-recovered projects.
- Develop and maintain SOPs, workflows, technical documentation and sample management processes, while identifying and resolving technical issues and maintaining safe and compliant operations.
- Provide technical advice and support to researchers, staff and students, including assistance with bioinformatics training, workshops, teaching materials and researcher-facing resources.
What You'll Bring
- A relevant degree in a scientific or technical field, or equivalent experience, with relevant expertise in genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in DNA and RNA library construction for Illumina-based sequencing, with knowledge of methodologies including WGS, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and EM-seq.
- Hands-on experience with nucleic acid and library quality control, including TapeStation, Qubit or equivalent instrumentation, and experience operating or supporting NGS instruments, particularly Illumina platforms.
- Strong computer literacy and experience with data management, bioinformatics tools and reproducible analysis practices for genomic or biomedical research datasets.
- Strong analytical, technical, investigative and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop procedures, follow protocols and apply sound ethical and quality practices.
- Highly developed communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage priorities and provide clear technical guidance and support to researchers and students.
