  • Amplify your impact at a world top 50 University
  • Join our inclusive, collaborative community
  • Be surrounded by extraordinary ideas - and the people who discover them

The Opportunity

Are you a driven materials researcher looking to pioneer the next wave of scientific discovery? Join the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University as a Research Fellow (Level A) and help to lead the charge in discovering, fabricating, and optimising emerging 2D halide perovskite materials.

Positioned at the dynamic intersection of materials science, optoelectronics, laboratory automation, and data science, this role offers an extraordinary platform to elevate your research career within a world-class, collaborative environment.

Why You Should Apply

  • Be Part of a Major National Collaboration: Work directly within a newly funded ARC Discovery Project and an ACAP-funded High-Throughput Material Discovery Platform. You will bridge nodes across leading Australian institutions, including Monash University, the University of Melbourne, RMIT, UNSW, and the University of Sydney, building an exceptional professional network.

  • Pioneer Data-Driven Science: Combine hands-on, experimental materials discovery with cutting-edge high-throughput platforms, robotics, machine learning, and autonomous experimental workflows.

  • Access World-Class Facilities: Based in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash, you will utilise state-of-the-art photophysical and optoelectronic characterisation suites.

About the Role

As a Level A Research Fellow, you will contribute directly to defined research projects while building your independent academic profile.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigate the growth, physical properties, thin films, and optoelectronic device development of 2D metal halide perovskites (including single-crystalline microcrystals).

  • Apply advanced photophysical techniques such as steady-state/time-resolved photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrical measurements.

  • Operate and develop high-throughput fabrication platforms utilising advanced data processing, programming, and machine learning/automation approaches.

  • Publish high-impact research findings and present results across key academic and industry forums.

  • Collaborate seamlessly across a multidisciplinary team while engaging in light academic, committee, and research-led teaching opportunities.

What We Are Looking For

  • Education: A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • Core Expertise: A strong research track record in functional materials, with specific hands-on experience in metal halide perovskites (particularly 2D perovskites), crystal growth, thin-film fabrication, or optoelectronic devices.

  • Analytical Skills: Deep knowledge of relevant optoelectronic and photophysical characterisation techniques including Raman spectroscopy, (time-correlated) photoluminescence microscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy and electrical measurements.

  • Desirable Edge: High-throughput experimentation, laboratory automation, programming, robotics, machine learning, or autonomous experimental design experience will be highly regarded.

  • Team Mindset: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a passion for interdisciplinary team success.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about combining experimental materials research with emerging data-driven and autonomous approaches to accelerate materials discovery.
