The Role
The ABC is looking for a digital journalist to join its online breaking news team in our newsroom in Brisbane. Our breaking news journalists cover some of the biggest stories from across Australia and the world. With support from our senior digital editors, you’ll work as part of a team dedicated to providing news, context and live coverage around the major stories of the day for the ABC News website and app.
If you’re packed with energy and the ability to think on your feet, we’ll train you to live blog, send breaking news app alerts and produce fast-turnaround explainers on sometimes complex subjects. You’ll have an opportunity to contribute ideas for stories and to improve the ways the ABC presents news on digital platforms. You will develop and maintain a strong awareness of current global and emerging trends in digital.
The Job
- Write accurate, engaging breaking news stories and explainers on the biggest stories of the day
- Live blog breaking news events to ensure a constant flow of trusted information is available to Australians when they need it
- Pitch and write original stories that are relevant to a broad section of Australians

About You
We are seeking digital journalists with practical experience in journalism and an ability to produce engaging, digital-first content. You will have a solid understanding of the way news stories are presented online and experience with online news publishing systems.
You’ll have:
- A demonstrated understanding of digital news media technologies and platforms.
- The ability to work as part of a team and meet tight production deadlines.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts across a seven-day roster and to adapt to changing work practices as required.
