The Role
Are you a natural storyteller with a passion for connecting with your local community? Ready to bring energy, curiosity, and your voice to Australia’s largest radio network?
This is your chance to join ABC Radio and become the next host of our much-loved ABC Western Plains Breakfast Show, broadcasting to audiences across Dubbo, Coonabarabran, Lightning Ridge, Mudgee, and beyond.
We’re after someone who lives and breathes the region — who’s excited to wake up with the west, uncover great local yarns, and share them in fresh and authentic ways. You’ll work closely with a seasoned producer, learning how to craft compelling stories that resonate on air and online.
If you’ve been thinking about a career with ABC Radio, this could be your first step — or your next big leap.
What you'll be doing:
- Hosting a daily local radio show with energy, warmth, and a deep connection to communities across Dubbo, Wellington, Mudgee, Gilgandra, Cobar, Walgett, and beyond.
- Building real relationships with your audience — both on-air and off — by being out in the community and knowing what matters to them.
- Working closely with a talented and supportive team in the Dubbo bureau to shape local coverage and contribute to big-picture journalism.
- Playing a key role in emergency broadcasting when it matters most, helping keep your community safe and informed.
- Creating original local content that resonates — with the potential to reach national platforms across the ABC.
Why you’ll love it
- You’ll have creative freedom to shape your show alongside an experienced producer and bring your personality to the show every day.
- You’ll be backed by a passionate local team and the resources of Australia’s most trusted media organisation.
- You’ll have the chance to grow — personally, professionally, and in your profile.
- And most importantly: you’ll be doing meaningful work, with and for your community.
Position Description: 50009250 PROGRAM MAKER.pdf
What you’ll bring to the show:
- Experience behind the scenes or on air — whether it’s live radio, podcasts, or digital storytelling, you know how to create content that connects.
- A creative streak for making compelling, original content that works across platforms — audio, digital, and social.
- Sharp editorial instincts — you can spot a good story, chase it down, and shape it into something that cuts through.
- A deep respect for diverse voices — and a drive to reflect the full richness of Australia's communities, especially Indigenous perspectives.
- A valid driver’s licence — because getting out there and meeting your audience face-to-face matters.
What we can offer you:
- 15.4% ABC Nominated Super.
- Paid parental, carer's and supporting partner leave.
- Salary packaging.
- ABC Mentoring
