Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mine operations, which has been producing zinc concentrate for customers around the world since 2017.
The mine is committed to a low-carbon future. In April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33% and this is just the start of its renewable energy transition.
Dugald River employs around 750 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. The village provides all the amenities including a gym, with a women’s only area, a tennis court, swimming pool, walking track and entertainment area.
Principal Mining Engineer
MMG Dugald River operation is currently looking for a highly skilled Principal Mining Engineer to join their technical team to drive the long-term strategic direction for the mine through application of innovative design, engineering and scheduling to maximise value return for the operation. In addition to driving the overarching mine plan the role will provide leadership to the mine technical services team as the long-term plan is distilled into medium- and short-term plans for execution.
Competencies, qualifications and skills:
Required
- Tertiary degree qualifications in mine engineering with a minimum of 10 years demonstrated experience.
- Understanding of underground mining design, engineering and scheduling practices, ideally long-hole stoping.
- Experience in mine production and planning engineer roles with a successful track record at the operational and planning level in underground metalliferous mining.
- Proficient using MS Office software, & mine design and scheduling software, preferably with Deswik
- High level of capability to analyse and interpret a wide range of technical data from a performance and planning perspective.
- Previous experience supervising/mentoring technical staff.
- Knowledge of annual budgeting processes and procedures and first principles cost estimation.
- Detailed understanding of the JORC Code, capability to assume the role of Competent Person for Ore Reserves and Chartered Professional status with a recognised institution (or ability to obtain).
Preferred/Advantageous
- Experience in mine ventilation, geology, backfill and geotechnical aspects of mine design.
- Contract management and managing subcontractors.
- Experience with PitRAM or other mining dispatch and fleet management systems.
- Previous experience in a senior mine operational role.
- First Class Mine Managers Certificate of Competency would be well regarded but not necessary.
- Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (Mining).
Key responsibilities will include:
- Develop and report key inputs into the IBP process, specifically the Net Smelter Return, Cut-Off Value (CoV) and Asset Business Planning (ABP) assumptions and seek necessary endorsements and approvals.
- Undertake the annual Ore Reserves, in line with company and JORC code requirements, and sign-off as the Competent Person (CP).
- Participate in IBP framing processes to identify long term value-add options for the mine design.
- Develop high-level mine designs and schedules to support strategic valuations and decision making for the asset.
- Define LoA scenarios to produce safe, integrated and operationally executable mine schedules and co-ordinate broader functional review/input to identify and detail key requirements for plan delivery (resource conversion, infrastructure and capital requirements).
- Support medium-term planning engineers and resource geologists to develop detailed three-year budgets aligned to the LoA plan.
- Identify and explore opportunities through long-term mine design to increase the assets value and maximise ore resource extraction.
- Undertake and provide support to site mining studies and projects.
- Contribute to development and updating of long-term integrated planning, mine design and scheduling standards.
- Provide mentoring and on-the-job training and support the personal development of the mine engineering team.
- Other duties/tasks as directed by the Principal – Business Improvement.
