Senior Process Control Engineer
The Senior Process Control Engineer is responsible for administration of the site’s process control assets to ensure robust, reliable, and efficient processes and equipment are available to support the operation.
Working closely with operational and technical teams, the Senior Process Control Engineer drives continuous improvement of the site’s control infrastructure, ensuring best practice standards, system integrity, and performance optimisation across all of site assets.
As a senior technical leader, the successful candidate will provide coaching and mentoring the process control team as well as system users. The Senior Engineer has a team of two process control engineers and up to two graduates reporting to them.
This role will be based on an 8/6, bus in bus out (BIBO) from Cloncurry or Mt Isa or fly in fly out (FIFO) from Townsville or Brisbane.
Qualifications Skills and Competencies:
- Relevant tertiary qualification or trade in Mechatronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, or Control Systems.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with process control systems in an industrial environment.
- Experience with Wonderware System Platform, MDT Autosave, Schneider M Series (M580, M340) PLCs, and Plant State Integrity.
- Strong understanding of process control system architecture, particularly SCADA and PLC-based systems and supporting virtual IT infrastructure.
- Advanced programming knowledge in structured text, ladder logic, and function block programming for Schneider and Allen Bradley PLC platforms.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and P&ID diagrams.
- Knowledge of key performance indicators for control systems and the ability to analyse and improve system performance.
- Familiarity with industrial networking protocols such as HART, IP, Modbus, DeviceNet, and Miri.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships across operational and technical teams.
- Proven ability to deliver projects and technical work on time, both independently and within a team environment.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Demonstrate leadership in safety, health, environment, and community (SHEC) by ensuring all work complies with the Safe Task Management framework.
- Provide technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and training to process control users, including graduates and operational personnel.
- Effectively manage team performance, rostering, and leave to ensure continuity of process control support across operations.
- Develop, maintain, and implement rigorous standards and processes to protect the integrity of the site’s process control systems.
- Coordinate, plan, and manage all process control system work while aligning with operational priorities and engaging key stakeholders across site.
- Lead change management processes to ensure all control system modifications are properly assessed, documented, and implemented systematically.
- Lead and execute initiatives such as alarm rationalisation, control loop tuning and optimisation, and HMI development and improvements.
