Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mining operations and has been producing zinc concentrate for customers around the world since 2017.
The mine is committed to a low-carbon future. In April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33% and this is just the start of its renewable energy transition.
Superintendent – Mining
Reporting to the Manager – Mine, the Superintendent – Mining is responsible for leading and coordinating the underground mining operations to ensure safe, efficient, and effective mine production. This includes overseeing the planning, scheduling, and execution of all mining activities in alignment with operational targets and strategic objectives.
MMG currently manages a hybrid owner operator/contractor model at Dugald River Mine. Production activities are completed as owner operator, with development activities outsourced to our contract partner Redpath Australia.
The Superintendent – Mining role involves direct supervision of the production team, with direct reports including Co-ordinator – Mining and indirect supervision of and coordination of mining activities with the development contractor.
Underground production is completed using Sub Level Open Stoping methods with a median stope size of approximately 10kt, mining approximately 1.5mtpa ore from stopes with an additional 300ktpa supplemented by development sources.
This position is offered on an 8/6 FIFO roster from Townsville or Brisbane, or BIBO from Cloncurry and Mt Isa.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure safe and efficient underground mining operations that meet 13-week schedule, budget, and Life of Mine targets.
- Drive continuous improvement, accountability, and high performance across the operational team.
- Oversee and co-ordinate workforce planning, training, and development to support current and future operational needs.
- Manage project planning, task allocation, and team workload to meet short- and long-term objectives.
- Implement cost-saving and efficiency initiatives aligned with departmental and organisational goals.
- Ensure compliance with budgets, procedures, and all regulatory and statutory requirements.
About You
To be considered, your skills should include:
- Proven leadership experience within the mining industry, with the ability to lead and mentor a team of co-ordinators and supervisors.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships across all levels.
- S1, S2, S3 Supervisor Competencies (Mining Supervisors Course).
- Experience working with a broad range of underground mining equipment and systems.
- Experience working in large scale high turnover sub level open stoping operations with paste fill.
- Queensland First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate (Underground Metalliferous) – desirable but by no means essential.
