Principal Mining Engineer

Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mine operations, which has been producing zinc concentrate for customers around the world since 2017. 

The mine is committed to a low-carbon future. In April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33% and this is just the start of its renewable energy transition. 

Dugald River employs around 750 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. The village provides all the amenities including a gym, with a women’s only area, a tennis court, swimming pool, walking track and entertainment area.   

Principal Mining Engineer

MMG Dugald River operation is currently looking for a highly skilled Principal Mining Engineer to join their technical team to drive the long-term strategic direction for the mine through application of innovative design, engineering and scheduling to maximise value return for the operation.  In addition to driving the overarching mine plan the role will provide leadership to the mine technical services team as the long-term plan is distilled into medium- and short-term plans for execution.   

Competencies, qualifications and skills:

Required

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mine Engineering, with over 10 years' experience in underground metalliferous mining, including both mine production and planning roles.
  • Proven ability to deliver strategic long-term underground mining design, engineering and schedules which are robust, operationally achievable and deliver maximum value to the business,
  • Highly proficient in mine design/scheduling software, preferably Deswik, with a high level of analytical ability to interpret technical data for planning and performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and mentoring technical staff, with knowledge of long-term and annual budgeting processes and first principles cost estimation.
  • In-depth understanding of the JORC Code, with the ability to act as a Competent Person for Ore Reserves and either hold or be eligible for Chartered Professional status with a recognised institution.

Preferred/Advantageous

  • Experience in mine ventilation, geology, backfill and geotechnical aspects of mine design.
  • Contract management and managing subcontractors.
  • Experience with PitRAM or other mining dispatch and fleet management systems.
  • Previous experience in a senior mine operational role.
  • First Class Mine Managers Certificate of Competency would be well regarded but not necessary.
  • Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (Mining).

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the development of key inputs for the Integrated Business Planning process, including Net Smelter Return, Cut-Off Value, Strategic and Asset Business Planning, while identifying long-term value-add opportunities.
  • Develop high-level mine designs and Life-of-Asset (LoA) schedules that support strategic valuations and executable plans, coordinating functional inputs and defining key infrastructure, capital, and resource needs.
  • Manage the annual Ore Reserves process in alignment with company and JORC Code standards, acting as the Competent Person (CP), and contribute to site mining studies and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Support the development of three-year budgets in collaboration with planning engineers and geologists, and explore long-term mine design opportunities to maximise ore extraction and asset value.
  • Mentor the mine engineering team, support ongoing technical development, and contribute to the improvement of mine design, scheduling standards, and long-term planning frameworks.
