About the Role:
The Emergency Medical Dispatcher plays a critical role in SA Ambulance Service, providing 24/7 emergency call-taking, dispatch and coordination of pre-hospital care and ambulance transport across South Australia. This role focuses on coordinating ambulance resources in regional areas, requiring strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills to navigate logistical challenges, limited infrastructure and the unique demands of a largely volunteer workforce. The position works collaboratively with other emergency service providers to ensure timely, effective responses to emergencies and may be required to support all dispatch areas within the EOC.
About the Team:
The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is identified as a critical and integral component of SA Ambulance Service providing 24/7 call receipt, dispatch and coordination of emergency out of hospital treatment and/or ambulance transportation services to the South Australian Community.

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP: We will support leadership development for our people at every level.
The role of Emergency Medical Dispatcher involves rapid and effective co-ordination of ambulance resources in response to emergency calls for life preserving medical treatment and ambulance transportation across South Australia. In situations that require multi-faceted management the position interacts with other emergency service providers in the delivery of a ‘complete’ service to the client. This position primarily works in region dispatch but may be required to work in all dispatch areas of the EOC.
The Emergency Medical Dispatcher however operates with a degree of complexity given its ‘country’ focus. There is a need to adapt techniques or processes that affect the way work is performed. Problem resolution requires analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of relevant data, and includes the investigation of alternative solutions given the lack of technological infrastructure; logistical challenges and the operational constraints of a (largely) volunteer workforce. There is a strong requirement to gain co-operation or influence others in the resolution of problem or priority issues.
What We Offer:
- Work in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment with a culture of inclusion and diversity.
- Giving back to the people of South Australia! Play a vital role in enhancing the well-being of our community.
- We take care of you! Access to a range of staff and wellness support programs!
Key Responsibilities:
1. Respond immediately to incidents and dispatch ambulance resources according to priority and response time targets.
2. Analyse and evaluate incidents to effectively coordinate the dispatch of ambulance resources based on situational needs.
3. Interact and coordinate with other emergency services (e.g., helicopter services, SES, power networks) when incident management requires wider or specialized resources.
4. Maintain skills and knowledge across all dispatcher job functions to undertake those roles as required.
5. Coordinate regional patient transfers within the state, liaising with healthcare providers, dispatchers, interstate counterparts, and associated service providers.
6. Notify Operational Managers, Team Leaders, and Peer Support of defined incidents as they occur, maintaining effective communication to facilitate coordination and dispatch of ambulance resources
