Overview

The  Rapid Inreach Service (RIS) is a multi-disciplinary team hosted within the Rural and Remote Mental Health Service (RRMHS) and functions across all Regional LHNs alongside other Older Person’s Mental Health Services (OPMHS) programs. It provides specialist and responsive in-reach to mainstream Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACF) for consumers with recognised or probable severe psychiatric illness, &/or a diagnosed dementia with complex, severe and persistent behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD).

Working within the RRMHS Older Person Mental Health Model of Service, the  RIS model of care is to prevent or reduce inappropriate transfer of consumers to acute care or the Emergency Departments, streamline and facilitate specialist care pathways, build skills in managing psychiatric illness and BPSD via education and training for staff of Residential Care Facilities (RACF) and provide short term clinical services to consumers, their families and RACF staff.

Within this Service, the Occupational Therapist will be required to apply clinical experience, specialist clinical knowledge and professional competence to plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive and integrated range of services, appropriate to the needs of the consumers, their carer’s and families.

The Occupational Therapist works under reduced clinical direction, and may contribute to the clinical supervision of less experienced allied health professionals, allied health assistants and students.  As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, including health professionals and service providers from other sectors, the Occupational Therapist utilises a combination of preventative, early intervention, treatment/therapy and evaluation approaches.
