About the role

RN-3  position is conditional upon completion of Masters of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner with endorsement with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.   Employees classified at this level provide clinical nursing expertise to contribute to the improvement of high quality, safe mental health services and provides clinical and consultancy services to nurses and leadership that support the recovery of mental health consumers across community, acute and rehabilitation service settings.  Employees classified at this level are experts within their area and stream of practice and have a significant degree of autonomy and decision making.

Nurses classified at this level as Nurse Practitioner Candidate are working towards becoming an expert and being able to provide extended practice in their specialist field, within their scope of practice. They develop their capacity for extended practice by increasing their knowledge and skills through ongoing clinical exposure, post graduate qualifications and mentoring, with supervision by an authorised nurse practitioner and/or medical staff.  Employees in this role accept accountability for their mental health nursing practice, the outcomes of nursing practices for the specific patient/client group, the professional advice given, delegations of care made and for addressing inconsistencies between practice and policy.

RN-4  A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia to practise within their scope under the legislatively protected title ‘nurse practitioner’. NPs are expert practitioners, practicing beyond the usual extent of a nurse, at an advanced level, with an expanded scope of practice, and with an advanced degree of autonomy and clinical decision making. They work independently and collaboratively in the health care system.

The NP facilitates and ensures best practice standards within the relevant area of mental health practice in CHSALHN MHS are maintained by working in partnership with key stakeholders on service development initiatives; enabling profession-specific clinical input into workforce and human resource processes.

The NP provides advanced clinical nursing and supervision in the delivery of integrated clinical mental health care to consumers across community, acute and rehabilitation service settings.  The NP is a recognised clinical expert within the relevant area of mental health practice and clinically accountable for the governance, leadership and delivery of quality mental health services across CALHN MHS.

Registered as a Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia for at least three years and holds a current practising certificate. Holds a qualification in mental health nursing equivalent to a Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing. Authorised as Nurse Practitioner [Mental Health] with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of  Australia.
