Join Our Team as an Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer: Support Culturally Safe Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients

Are you passionate about supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities? We’re looking for a dedicated Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) to ensure culturally safe and respectful care for patients throughout their hospital journey. This is your opportunity to be a vital link between healthcare services and Aboriginal communities, making a real difference in the lives of patients and their families.

About the Role:

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) plays a key role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients admitted to hospitals within the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (RMCLHN). As a trusted cultural partner to clinical teams, you will ensure patients’ care is delivered in a culturally appropriate, respectful, and sensitive manner.

Working alongside hospital clinicians, the AHLO assists patients and their escorts in navigating the healthcare system—from admission through to discharge—and liaises with home community health centres to support continuity of care. The AHLO also plays a critical role in bridging communication between clinicians and patients, helping to explain health procedures in a culturally respectful and easy-to-understand way.

In addition to providing direct support to patients, you will coordinate transport arrangements, advocate for the use of interpreters where needed, and ensure Aboriginal identity is appropriately acknowledged in health records. As a cultural resource for RMCLHN staff, you will support the delivery of culturally appropriate services and act as an advocate for Aboriginal health needs within the hospital setting.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Significant experience in working with Aboriginal individuals, their families and communities.
  • Experience in working in a health and multidisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing, developing and maintaining effective networks, alliances and relationships with Aboriginal individuals, organisations and communities.
