Join the future of regional GP training through the Single Employer Model (SEM)

The Single Employer Model (SEM) is being trialled throughout regional and rural South Australia with the aim of attracting and retaining more doctors in communities that need them.

Under the Commonwealth initiative, GP and rural generalist trainees are offered a contract with a regional Local Health Network (LHN) as a salaried employee potentially for the length of their training across primary care and hospital settings. This allows trainees to keep accrued SA Health Award entitlements.

About the Role

As a GP/RG Registrar (MDP2) in the SEM program, you will:

  • Provide patient-centred care in both general practice and hospital settings under senior clinical supervision.
  • Contribute to ED and general medicine care within the local hospital, upon negotiation and in line with training
  • Engage in continuing education, training, and performance development activities.
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, consultants, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Be employed directly by a regional LHN, enabling continuity, support, and rural workforce development.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for this role, you must:
  • Hold a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or equivalent).
  • Be fully registered with AHPRA.
  • Be accepted into (or applying to) ACRRM or RACGP.
  • Be PGY3 or above at the time of commencement.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to rural health and improving outcomes for regional communities.
  • Ability to work across both primary care and hospital environments.
  • Strong clinical judgment and communication skills.
  • Competence in emergency and procedural skills.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal health issues and rural health challenges in South Australia.

Application Process

To be part of the SEM trial, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the regional LHN you wish to work with. The EOI process opens mid-2025 for positions commencing in February 2026.

Next Steps:

  1. To be part of the SEM trial you will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the regional LHN you would like to be employed by.
  2. After submitting your EOI, the LHN will initiate discussions with you and your college.
  3. You will then be advised on how to formally apply for available SEM roles in your preferred region.
