About the Role:

Join our dedicated team as a Medical Consultant Rural Generalist – Emergency/Inpatients and provide high-quality, person-centred care in a dynamic rural hospital environment. Based within the Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network, you will lead the clinical management of patients across both the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective care. Your role also includes providing after-hours Code Blue support and contributing to a 24/7 roster.

You’ll be instrumental in shaping and advancing care models, such as fast-tracking, nurse-led strategies, and criteria-led discharges, all while promoting innovation and collaboration across teams. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in strategic planning, quality improvement activities, clinical governance, and staff education—including the supervision and training of junior staff and ongoing professional development.

With potential to expand your scope of practice and contribute to broader service delivery areas based on your skill set and clinical interests, this role offers variety, leadership, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference in rural health. Be part of a network committed to innovation, excellence, and continuous improvement across all areas of care.

The appointment to the Head of Unit (HOU) position is for a minimum term of 12 months, up to a maximum of 5 years. This leadership role includes the Small Unit Managerial Allowance, as outlined in clause 4.3.2 of the SA Medical Officers Award.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS), the HOU will take on key responsibilities in addition to their clinical duties as a Medical Consultant. These leadership responsibilities are carried out within the existing contracted hours, with up to two (2) days per fortnight allocated as non-clinical time to support service planning, team development, and clinical governance activities.
