The Senior Peer Specialist at Margaret Tobin Centre (MTC), plays a key role in ensuring that MTC Lived Experience Workforce maintains a recovery-oriented focus and clear scope of practice, and draws on their lived experience of mental health challenges, service use and recovery to support consumers and the clinical team to achieve improvement of treatment outcomes for the consumers.

About the role: 

In collaboration with Mental Health Service staff, will develop and evaluate educational groups and peer-led initiatives for consumers and staff, with the aim of promoting an understanding of recovery, psychological well-being and self-management strategies.
Duties for the role will include:

  • Use high level peer specialist skills to form authentic peer relationships with consumers by appropriately and purposefully sharing personal lived experience and understanding of the impact of mental health challenges, service use and recovery.
  • Use high level knowledge and skills to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team (MDT), staff and service providers to improve understanding of personal recovery and build capacity to provide recovery oriented mental health services.
  • Support consumers to articulate their needs and goals, and the way in which they want to receive support, and advocate for the inclusion of this in care planning and service delivery.
  • Develop and deliver staff education sessions on matters relevant to PW practice, values & principles & LE perspectives more broadly.

About you:

  • Minimum Certificate 4 in Mental Health Peer Work or willingness to work towards
  • Ability to effectively engage with a variety of relevant community services to facilitate consumer engagement with, for example, housing and independence supports, social and recreational activities, community facilities and services.
  • Personal lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery, including the maintenance of ongoing recovery and wellbeing.
  • Experience in facilitating consumer peer support/psychoeducation programs and staff awareness/education/development programs.
  • Strong advocacy and partnership building skills to apply in a clinical mental health environment working within multidisciplinary teams.
