Mental Health Innovation Opportunity - Consultant Psychiatrist Co-responder Position

This proposal recommends the implementation of a joint mental health crisis co-responder model in South Australia between the South Australia Police (SAPOL) and Southern Adelaide Local Health Network’s (SALHN) Mental Health Services, aimed at improving outcomes for individuals experiencing acute psychological distress in the community. The purpose of this proposal is to establish a co-responder team—consisting of a mental health clinician and a SAPOL officer—to provide timely, on-site assessment, de-escalation, and coordinated follow-up.

About the role: 

Reporting to the Head of Unit, this role is responsible for providing clinical services of the highest possible standard to individuals identified to have mental health related events within the community or police custodial facilities by the SALHN SAPOL Co-Response Team by providing clinical leadership and contribution to a multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of patient care.

Duties for the role will include:

  • Being responsive to the expectations and needs of both clinical and non-clinical colleagues,
  • Provide a high-quality clinical service and clinical leadership,
  • Ensuring that patients and families are given adequate information upon which to base treatment decisions and follow up,
  • Contributing to an after-hours on-call service in accordance with a roster agreed by the Department Director

About you:

  • Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent. Appropriate Specialist Qualifications and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner with Specialist registration (Psychiatry); or another qualification as defined in the SA Medical Officers Award,
  • Demonstrated high standard of clinical practice in Psychiatry,
  • Demonstrated professional integrity, leadership and motivational skills,
  • Demonstrated participation in approved continuing medical education since attaining specialist qualification,
  • Experience with the supervision and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
