About the role

As a Medical Scientist within the Drugs Unit of the Chemical Pathology Directorate, you will play a vital role in delivering a high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective diagnostic pathology service. You will apply your scientific expertise and technical competence to ensure the smooth daily operation of the unit—supporting accurate and timely testing that underpins patient care and clinical decision-making. Your contribution will be central to maintaining the integrity and precision of laboratory results, ensuring that all work meets established scientific and quality standards.

Working closely with the Directorate management team and the Quality Officer, you will help monitor and improve quality performance, particularly in areas where process variation may occur. You will also contribute to the strategic direction of the discipline by supporting innovation, enhancing laboratory processes, and promoting a culture of excellence and collaboration. About You

You are a highly skilled and motivated Medical Scientist with extensive experience in diagnostic services and a commitment to delivering excellence in laboratory science. You take pride in your analytical expertise, leadership capability, and ability to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, quality, and safety in all aspects of your work.

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Scientific and Technical Expertise – Hold a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent, with extensive knowledge in your laboratory discipline and experience in providing diagnostic services, quality control, and assurance.

  • Leadership and Collaboration – Proven ability to lead, motivate, and coordinate team performance, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, professional development, and high-quality service delivery.

  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills – Strong capability to solve complex scientific problems, manage data using analytical software, and contribute to innovation through service and process improvements.

  • Communication and Professionalism – Excellent communication, organisational, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with clinicians and staff, manage competing priorities, and uphold the principles of safety, equity, and accountability.
