The Retrieval Fellow will work with an experienced Retrieval Paramedic or Nurse colleague to deliver high quality, patient focussed care to critically injured adults and children. Responding by helicopter, rapid response road vehicle or turbo prop fixed wing aircraft.

With support, the Retrieval Fellow will also participate in retrieval and transport clinical coordination, take a leading role in service Clinical Governance and quality assurance activities, educate and mentor less experienced medical staff within the service and collaboratively lead service pre-hospital and retrieval research activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Medical Retrieval and Clinical Coordination roster, providing high-level clinical advice and logistic coordination in collaboration with MedSTAR Retrieval Nurse Clinical Coordinators, SAAS, RFDS, and healthcare facilities
  • Function as medical team member alongside paramedics or nurses to stabilise and safely transport critically injured and ill patients in pre-hospital and retrieval environments using road, rotary wing, and fixed wing transport
  • Ensure appropriate healthcare facility destinations and critical care bed availability based on patient requirements, while coordinating with referring and receiving facilities
  • Lead quality assurance processes including daily case review meetings, clinical data analysis, policy development using evidence-based principles, and coordination of relevant research projects
  • Maintain clinical equipment readiness through regular checking procedures, troubleshooting issues, equipment restoration after retrievals, and evaluation of new clinical equipment
  • Provide mentorship and training to less experienced medical staff during retrievals, complete comprehensive patient care documentation, and participate in counter-disaster activities and major incident responses
