About the role

The Yorke and Northern region encompasses the Yorke Peninsula, significant areas of Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent, Southern Flinders Ranges, and the Mid North. The Yorke Peninsula offers stunning beaches and friendly local towns including historic inland mining towns. It is surrounded by sea and is one of South Australia’s most accessible seaside escape locations with breathtaking national parks where emus, kangaroos, tammar wallabies and many bird species can be seen. You will also find plenty of bakeries, craft breweries and distilleries. The Mid North region is renowned for its superb rural panoramas, culturally unique townships and settlements and is South Australia’s gateway to the outback and southern Flinders Ranges. The area is made up of ancient and dramatic landscapes, peaceful tree lined gorges and a wealth of native wildlife. Clare Valley sits within this region and offers some of South Australia’s best wines with abundant cellar doors to explore.

An exciting opportunity has become available for an Intern Pharmacist to join the Yorke and Northern Local Health Network (YNLHN) team, based in the state's Mid North at the Port Pirie hospital, approximately two and a half hours north of Adelaide. The YNLHN pharmacy team supplies clinical services to all sixteen sites within the LHN and provides care to a wide variety of patients in terms of ages and conditions. The area is a great place to gain experience in a diverse range of clinical areas in a supported environment within the friendly and helpful YNLHN team. There is also the possibility for accommodation arrangements to be organised through the pharmacy department if needed.

Previous staff who have completed their internships at Port Pirie hospital have enjoyed their time regionally and have been very successful in their studies and ongoing careers with SA Pharmacy. The relaxed country lifestyle allows for a short commute with free parking and gives you the benefit of living and working within the community that you are servicing. It's a rewarding start to a health professional career that allows you to build fulfilling relationships with staff in a variety of disciplines, patients and community members.

As an Intern Pharmacist, you will undertake a comprehensive practical training program designed to meet the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Working under the supervision of experienced pharmacists, you will gain hands-on experience across all aspects of pharmaceutical care, including dispensing, compounding, medicines information, and patient counselling. You will be part of a supportive and collaborative team of professionals dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-focused pharmacy services across SA Pharmacy.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical and professional skills while contributing to the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines. You will play an active role in ensuring the best outcomes for patients through the preparation and supply of medications, participation in multidisciplinary care, and the provision of accurate therapeutic advice to staff and patients alike.

About You

You are a motivated and detail-oriented Intern Pharmacist ready to apply your academic knowledge in a practical healthcare environment. With a commitment to learning, accuracy, and patient-centred care, you bring enthusiasm, adaptability, and a willingness to contribute to a supportive, multidisciplinary team.

  • Qualified and Registered: Hold a pharmacy degree or diploma from an accredited School of Pharmacy, or have completed Stage 1 of the APEC registration process, and are provisionally registered (or eligible) with AHPRA.

  • Communicative and Team-Focused: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively, accept supervision, and contribute effectively to all areas of pharmacy service delivery.

  • Organised and Detail-Oriented: Demonstrated ability to dispense efficiently and accurately, use initiative, manage competing priorities, and maintain precision in a busy clinical setting.

  • Knowledgeable and Adaptable: Sound understanding of medication use, pharmacology, and relevant legislation, with a proactive approach to learning and applying safety and quality standards in the workplace.
