About the role

  • Provide nursing and/or midwifery services in a variety of health service settings, which have been consolidated by experience and/or further study, with staff at this level developing from competent to proficient practitioners.
  • Accepts accountability for their own practice standards, activities delegated to others, and the guidance and development of less experienced staff.
  • The Clinical Nurse/Midwife role at this level continues to be predominantly clinical in nature; however, employees are assigned appropriate portfolios. For this role, the portfolio is providing support of all women to establish and maintain lactation and breastfeeding across the neonatal services and supporting the ongoing partnership between the Red Cross Lifeblood Milk Bank Services and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Key duties of the role

  • Provide proficient, family centred, clinical nursing/midwifery care and/or individual case management to patients/clients in a defined clinical area
  • Undertake the role of Key Contact between the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross Lifeblood Milk Bank service
  • Participate in clinical teaching of nurses and/or midwives working in the neonatal services in the application of the BFHI 10 Steps to successful breastfeeding in the context of the neonatal services
  • Participate in clinical auditing, clinical trials and/or evaluative research relevant to the role
  • Provide shift by shift leadership in the provision of nursing/midwifery care within a team or unit and facilitate patient flow, if required

Skills and Experience

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse and/or Midwife by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and who holds, or who is eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate
  • Current International Board of Lactation Consultants, Lactation Consultant (IBLCLC) qualification
  • Completion of Group 1 requirements for the Baby Friendly Health Initiative accreditation
  • Registered Nurse and/or Midwife with at least 3 years post-graduation experience or currently classified as a Clinical Nurse or Clinical Nurse/Midwife
  • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including providing specialist advice and reports, undertaking consultation, and working with individuals and groups to drive and achieve positive health targets and outcomes
