About the role

As an Anatomical Pathology Fellow, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of efficient, high-quality and cost-effective surgical pathology and cytology services within the Anatomical Pathology Directorate. Working closely with a team of highly skilled pathologists, laboratory scientists and clinical partners, you will contribute to accurate and timely diagnostic services, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and clinical support across the network. This role will allow you to consolidate and extend your specialist skills while being actively involved in complex case work and multidisciplinary collaboration.

In addition to your clinical responsibilities, you will contribute meaningfully to medical education and professional development across the service. Through teaching, in-service training, patient review and ongoing self-directed learning, you will support undergraduate and postgraduate training programs while advancing your own expertise. With advanced expertise in surgical pathology and cytology, you bring sound clinical judgement, excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to supporting clinicians, laboratory teams and patients. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant Anatomical Pathologist to join our team. The successful applicant will contribute to diagnostic reporting, multidisciplinary team meetings, and teaching as well as training activities.

Whilst we are seeking a pathologist with experience, new graduates are encouraged to apply. Mentoring and support will be available for new graduates to further subspecialty interests for the right applicant. Prior experience in gastrointestinal pathology including upper GIT, Urology, Gynaecology, Thoracic and Head and neck pathology would be desirable.

In this role, you will bring:

  • Specialist Qualifications & Registration
    MBBS (or equivalent) with appropriate specialist qualifications and eligibility for Specialist registration with AHPRA in Anatomical Pathology, in accordance with the SA Medical Officers Award.

  • Clinical Excellence & Technical Expertise
    High level of competency in surgical pathology and cytology, with the proven ability to deliver accurate, timely diagnostic reporting and meet required turnaround times.

  • Collaboration & Communication
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with clinicians, pathologists, laboratory and administrative staff in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Knowledge & Professional Standards
    Broad and current knowledge of anatomical pathology, pathology service trends, WHS obligations and computerised reporting systems, supported by a commitment to continuing medical education and recertification requirements.

Our Anatomical Pathology Department is a dynamic sub-specialist public laboratory that provides diagnostic services to Royal Adelaide Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital, private practitioners as well as regional South Australia.   We provide diagnostic anatomical pathology services across a broad spectrum of clinical disciplines including breast, endocrine, head and neck, central nervous system including muscle and nerve, Urology, gastrointestinal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, haematolymphoid, oculoplastic, dermatology etc. We also provide FISH diagnostic molecular service for solid tumours, and non-coronial hospital autopsy services.  Our team is committed to excellence in diagnostic services, education, registrar training (including post part 1 independent reporting), and translational research. Collaboration with local universities and research teams is encouraged.
