Our secure, dementia-enabling environment is supported by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team trained in mental health, aged care, and trauma-informed care. We work closely with families and carers to deliver person-centred care and ensure smooth transition to community-based settings.

If you’re passionate about making a difference in dementia care and want to work in a collaborative, evidence-based environment, we’d love to hear from you.

About the Role:

As a Carer Consultant, you will bring your lived experience of caring for a person with mental illness or dementia to support families and carers within Northgate Neuro-Behavioural Unit. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team under the guidance of the Senior Social Worker, you will:

  • Provide emotional support and practical information to families/carers throughout the consumer’s admission.
  • Share strategies and insights to promote family-inclusive care and recovery.
  • Assist with education sessions, treatment pathway information, and respite options.
  • Contribute the carer perspective in care planning, family meetings, and service development.
  • Act as a resource for carer-friendly practices and community supports.

This role is pivotal in ensuring families feel heard, informed, and supported during a challenging time, while helping embed family-inclusive approaches across the service.

About You:

You are passionate about supporting families and carers and have personal experience caring for someone with mental illness or dementia. You understand the challenges families face and can use your lived experience to provide empathy, guidance, and practical strategies.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • Excellent communication skills – able to listen, support, and share information clearly.
  • Collaborative approach – comfortable working within a multidisciplinary team and contributing to care planning.
  • Organisational skills – able to manage time effectively and coordinate carer forums or education sessions.
  • Professional boundaries – maintaining respect and sensitivity in all interactions.
  • Knowledge of community resources – including respite options and carer supports.

A Certificate IV in Mental Health or similar is desirable, but not essential. What matters most is your ability to use your experience to make a positive difference for families during a challenging time.
