About the role

In this pivotal leadership role, you will play a key part in supporting the diagnosis and understanding of muscle and nerve disorders by delivering a specialised, reliable and high-quality technical service. As the Muscle & Nerve Lead Supervisor, you’ll oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring workflows run smoothly while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and care. Your expertise will guide the examination, interpretation and dissection of muscle and nerve biopsy tissue, and you’ll take pride in maintaining robust quality control measures across a range of complex histological, enzyme histological and immunohistochemical techniques.

You will be a trusted source of knowledge and support for both laboratory and research staff, providing hands-on training, technical guidance and mentorship to help others grow. In this role, you’ll also collaborate closely with surgeons, mortuary teams and medical personnel, educating them in the best-practice collection of muscle and nerve biopsies. With responsibility for performing complex and non-complex dissections in accordance with NPAAC guidelines, you’ll make a meaningful contribution to patient care, clinical outcomes and the ongoing advancement of specialised diagnostic services.

You’re a skilled and detail-focused technical specialist who thrives in a laboratory environment where precision, collaboration and advanced histopathological practice come together. With a passion for supporting high-quality diagnostic services, you bring the technical depth, professional judgement and steady focus needed to excel in this specialised area.

You will bring:

  • Advanced technical capability, including proven experience in histopathology, specialist staining methods, snap freezing, frozen sectioning and the prosection of complex specimens.

  • Strong analytical and meticulous work habits, with expert knowledge of tissue preparation, histotechnology, immunohistochemical and enzyme histochemical techniques, and an ability to consistently deliver accurate results.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, able to work closely with pathologists, trainees and multidisciplinary colleagues while also operating confidently with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent organisational skills and resilience, including the ability to prioritise workflow, meet turnaround times under pressure, follow established procedures, and maintain high levels of focus and attention to detail in intricate technical work.
