About the role

As a Medical Scientist, you will contribute to the high-quality blood bank laboratory services through the delivery of reliable and accurate scientific activities. Working both independently and as part of a team, you will contribute to a range of tasks that require expert scientific knowledge and the consistent application of established laboratory practices. Your work will support day-to-day blood bank laboratory operations and assist scientific and technical staff in delivering accurate and timely service.

In this role, you will undertake activities that draw on your expertise and practical skills, applying standardised procedures in the blood bank. Major responsibilities in the blood bank include:

  • Performing pre-transfusion compatibility testing and other Blood Bank related testing, including performance & resolution of blood group and complex antibody investigations including the interpretation and communication of findings.
  • Inventory Management including performing receipt, dispatch, and monitoring of blood product stocks so as to ensure adequate supply and minimisation of product wastage.
  • Assigning priority to work activities, particularly in emergency and critical bleeding situations.
  • Liaising with the on-call medical scientists, Haematologists, LifeBlood Medical Officer and clients as deemed appropriate in working towards resolution of issues of both a diagnostic and technical nature.

  • Scientific capability & attention to detail: You hold a science degree recognised by AIMS and have laboratory experience. You can follow written and verbal instructions accurately, work under limited supervision, and handle confidential information professionally.
  • Teamwork & communication: You communicate effectively with colleagues and contribute positively within a team environment. Your interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills allow you to support smooth laboratory operations.
  • Organisation & problem-solving: You manage variable workloads efficiently, meet defined timelines, and use initiative to identify and resolve problems. You demonstrate strong numerical and keyboard skills and confidently use laboratory-related software.
  • Commitment to safety & customer service: You bring a strong customer service focus, a desire to work in a laboratory setting, and a sound understanding of laboratory principles, scientific practice and Work Health and Safety requirements.
