Shape Healthcare Excellence - Workshop Technician/Senior Technician Biomedical Engineering

About the role: 

This is a workshop-based, hands-on role involving the fabrication, modification, design, and repair of a wide range of bespoke mechanical components to support hospital clinical services and research programs.

Unlike many workshop mechanic or fabricator roles that focus on repetitive production work, this position offers significant day-to-day variety. Tasks range from one-off custom fabrications and urgent clinical support jobs to longer-term research and development projects. No two days are the same.

You will work closely with biomedical engineers, clinicians, and researchers, translating practical requirements into mechanical solutions. This dynamic environment provides ongoing technical challenge, problem-solving opportunities, and exposure to diverse applications rarely seen in traditional workshop roles.  This role suits candidates ranging from recent graduates to experienced tradespeople who enjoy precision work, problem-solving, and variety in their daily tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Manual machining using lathes, milling machines etc.
• Design, fabrication and repair of mechanical components
• Interpretation of engineering drawings and specifications
• Collaboration with biomedical engineers, clinicians, and researchers
• Adherence to workplace safety, quality, and compliance requirements

Essential requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• An Australian-recognised trade qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. fitter & turner)
• Demonstrated experience with manual lathes and milling machines
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
• High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment
• Commitment to safe work practices
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to obtain a National Police Clearance
• Ability to meet SA Health immunisation requirements

Desirable (but not essential)

• Welding experience (e.g. Oxy-acetylene, TIG, MIG, and Arc)
• CAD experience (training can be provided)
• Experience working in regulated or technical environments

*No medical background is required.

This is a single vacancy, with four possible appointment classifications. The successful applicants will be appointed in the position appropriate to their skills, qualifications, and experience.

Please note that this position is multi-classed as either a OPS3, TGO2, OPS5 or TGO3 and classification will be determined by qualifications and experience.
