About the role

As a Medical Scientist (MeS-1 / MeS-2) in Cytopathology at SA Pathology, you’ll play a vital role behind the scenes of patient care, contributing your scientific expertise to the accurate preparation, examination and reporting of cytology specimens. Working within a highly skilled and supportive team, you’ll follow robust quality and training standards while engaging in hands-on diagnostic work that directly supports clinicians and improves patient outcomes. This role offers meaningful exposure to specialised cytopathology practice, with scope to grow your skills and confidence in a dynamic laboratory environment.

Depending on your experience, you’ll apply increasing levels of professional judgement, technical expertise and scientific knowledge to standard and more complex diagnostic procedures. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues, supervisors and clinicians, communicate with internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to quality control, troubleshooting and continuous improvement. At the MeS-2 level, you’ll bring deeper specialist knowledge, support validation and quality processes, and help shape best practice through your professional insight. Whether you’re building your foundations or ready to take the next step, this is an opportunity to grow your career in a respected service where your work truly matters.

About You

You’re a capable and motivated Medical Scientist with a strong foundation in cytopathology, ready to contribute at either MeS-1 or MeS-2 level, depending on your qualifications and experience. You bring a commitment to quality, accuracy and patient-centred practice, and enjoy working collaboratively in a busy laboratory environment that values professionalism and continuous improvement.

  • Recognised qualifications and discipline knowledge aligned with NPAAC requirements, with sound (MeS-1) to advanced (MeS-2) expertise in cytology, cytopreparatory techniques, laboratory principles and quality procedures
  • Strong technical and analytical capability, performing high-quality diagnostic testing, quality control activities and equipment troubleshooting, with increasing professional judgement and autonomy at MeS-2 level
  • Well organised and proactive, able to manage competing priorities, work under pressure, meet deadlines and identify and resolve issues, with initiative appropriate to your level of experience
  • Clear, respectful communicator and team contributor, who values customer service, confidentiality and collaboration with colleagues, clinicians and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality pathology services
